Chapter 26
Nice, France
Karev inhaled deeply as he slowly regained consciousness. He moaned involuntarily and stirred, and fought to make sense out of a chaotic collage of memories – explosions, shooting, his security team being cut down like summer grass. His eyes fluttered open and he blinked away a dryness that seemed to extend from his corneas all the way down his throat, and forced himself to focus. Blurred images swam into view, and he could make out a lamp on a circular table. A man was seated beside it, texting on his phone.
Karev tried to clear his throat and speak. “What–”
The word was a croak that sounded alien to him. The man glanced at the Russian, stood, and moved out of sight. Karev tried to turn his head to follow him, but the muscles in his neck refused to obey, and all he could do was stare at the lamp like he was paralyzed.
Eventually he could move more than just his eyes, and sensation returned to his limbs with the prickly stinging of appendages to which circulation had suddenly returned. The sensation was reassuring but uncomfortable, and he remembered being injected with something just before he’d faded out. Whatever it was had done a number on him, to the point where trying to swallow required a monumental effort, and willing his fingers to move took every ounce of concentration he could muster.
A figure moved between the lamp and his position, and he tried to speak again.
“What…where…am…I?”
“Nicolai Karev, you’ve been a naughty boy. You’re lucky that we’re patient,” the figure said in Russian.
“What…is this?”
“You’re in good hands. We’ve taken you into custody, of a sort, for plotting crimes against our country.”
“You killed my men.”
“We had no alternative. But note that we spared your life.”
“Why?”
“So that you can tell us what we need to know.”
Karev closed his eyes. “None of this makes any sense. My daughter…”
“We don’t care about your daughter. But if you ever want to see her again, you’re going to have to cooperate with us. As you can see, we’re serious.”
“I don’t understand what you want.”
“We know about your partner.”
Karev’s head began to pound. “I don’t have a partner.”
“You know who we mean. Oliver Kalda.”
Karev’s eyes widened. “Him? He tried to kill me. And he kidnapped my daughter. He has her.”
The man’s face leaned into Karev’s field of vision. He was middle-aged, with several days of beard coloring his jaw, his face largely unremarkable except for the intensity of his gaze. “What are you talking about?”
“First of all, Kalda isn’t my partner. Second, he kidnapped my daughter after his attempt to murder me failed. What are you failing to understand?”
The man’s expression hardened. “We know he’s working with you. Lies will do you no good.”
“Wrong. He was working for me. He’s a hacker. But he kept increasing his rates while failing to deliver as promised, so I stopped paying him. That’s when he tried to kill me. That’s the entirety of our relationship. And now he has my daughter.” Karev paused.
